Chapter Twelve

Sherry returned home after work with two items left to accomplish on her day’s to-do list. After mulling through her recipe files, she found a couple she wanted to print out. She studied the sheets. “Bacon, bacon, bacon. What to make with bacon? For the bacon national championship, the dish has got to be bold. Might be a good contest to enter my Sticky Peppered Maple Chicken with Spiced Pumpkin Pancakes. No, doesn’t showcase bacon enough. The recipe I choose has got to scream bacon. Maple Bacon Sweet Potato Biscotti. That’s the one. The judges will have to give me high marks for originality, if nothing else. Even I was surprised when I came up with that flavor combination. Three things that aren’t on anyone’s radar as belonging together, bacon plus biscotti plus sweet potato. I’ve held on to this recipe until the right contest came along. I have a feeling bacon in a cookie form is the right fit, even though no one else would believe it at first glance. I’m going with my gut on this one.” Sherry decorated the selected recipe with an ink star and placed the paper on her worktable.

Next, she unearthed the year-to-date seed contributions housed in organized compartments.

“Let’s see. We have plenty of early summer plantings—string beans, edamame, pumpkin, cucumbers. Some seeds that need fostering next month to get started indoors—tomato, broccoli, Brussels sprouts. We definitely need more early planting seeds.” Sherry pulled the package delivered by Quentin and nestled it next to the box she’d received while in Florida.

The rustling of the paper and plastic alerted Chutney to possible treats being prepped for the offering. He trotted over to Sherry’s feet. She ruffled his ear fur, which did nothing to ease his eagerness to be pampered with a crunchy delight.

“I’ll get you a biscuit in a minute. First things first, I need to record these seeds. I’m a bit behind in my duties with all that’s been going on.” Sherry tore off the remainder of the brown paper from the box. She flipped the paper over in search of a return address but found none. She was left staring at a small shoebox. She lifted the lid, revealing two bags of seeds. They were nestled in shredded paper with a note written in block letters attached.
